A fundraising campaign organised on micro-blogging website Twitter saw over 2,670 Twitter users pooling in money for Bollywood actor Nana Patekar and Marathi film maker Makarand Anaspure’s non-government organisation, Naam Foundation.

The foundation has been using the funds thus raised for the drought victims in Maharashtra.

The twitterati collectively sent out more than 20,000 unique tweets to raise funds for Maharashtra drought victims for the fundraising campaign, named #IcareISupport.

Conceptualised by cricket software company CricHQ, the campaign succeeded in raising several lakhs of rupees.

“This campaign showed social media’s unique ability to rally people for a worthy social cause. It also gave sports lovers a unique opportunity to channel their passion into direct benefits for the drought victims in Maharashtra,” Aroon Kumar, General Manager of Gobal Marketing at CricHQ, said in a statement.

The #IcareIsupport campaign drew support from several Indian and international cricketers as well.

New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris supported the campaign by urging his fans through a recorded video while Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, former New Zealand cricket team captain Stephen Fleming and the Twitter handle of Chennai Super Kings team also tweeted campaign messages inviting fund

He has featured in multiple adult comedies like “Masti” and “Kya Kool Hain Hum”, but actor Aftab Shivadasani doesn’t think it has slotted him into a genre.

Asked if he feels slotted in adult comedies, Aftab said here: “In my entire career, I have almost done 45 films. Out of that, four or five have been adult comedies. So I can’t say that I have been slotted.”

The 39-year-old actor, who began his career with “Mast” in 1999, says that it is because he has been seen in films in the same genre “back to back” that people think he is getting slotted.

“I think that will wash away once I do something else,” added the actor, who was here to promote his forthcoming entertainer “Great Grand Masti”.

Bollywood star couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, who are expecting their first baby, have rubbished reports of having done a sex determination test in London.

Saif (45) married the (35) years old Kareena in 2012.

According to some media reports, the couple visited a doctor in London for a check-up and the sex determination recently.

“The report is completely baseless and the couple strongly denies any such incident. There was no such discussion with any doctor in London and the report is purely a figment of someone’s imagination,” spokesperson of both the actors said in a statement here.

Earlier, superstar Shah Rukh Khan had faced similar accusations when his son Abram was born.

Saif has two children — daughter Sara and son Ibrahim — from his previous marriage to the actress Amrita Singh.

On work front, Saif will be seen next in Vishal Bharadwaj’s “Rangoon” while Kareena will begin work on her next film “Veere Di Wedding” alongside Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania in August this year.

Actors Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivadasani, Riteish Deshmukh and Urvashi Rautela chose to stay mum on the online leak of their forthcoming film “Great Grand Masti” prior to its release.

The movie, a “naughty comedy”, got leaked online and High Definition (HD) prints were available for download.

Asked to comment on the leak, Vivek told reporters here: “Unfortunately, we cannot talk on this topic… our film’s production house will issue on a statement on this.”

Following the online leak last week, the movie’s makers rescheduled its release date, putting it out a week before it was slated to hit the screens.

Directed by Indra Kumar, “Great Grand Masti” is the third part of the “Masti” franchise. It will hit screens on Friday.

Actor Riteish Deshmukh, who welcomed his second child with wife Genelia D’Souza recently, says the actress will always be his favourite co-star.

The “Great Grand Masti” star said he would love to reteam with his actress wife in future.

“Right now she is enjoying the role of a mother but as far as work is concerned I would love to work with her. I’ve done three films with her,” Riteish, 37, said.

“Genelia was, is and will always be my most favourite co-star,” he added.

The couple, who got married in 2012 and had their first baby Riaan in November 2014, recently welcomed their second child, a baby boy, last month.

Actress Urvashi Rautela says her character in her upcoming adult comedy “Great Grand Masti” is overcontrolling and overpowering.

Urvashi, who plays the role of a ghost in the film, said her character has an essence of beauty and innocence.

“My character in the film is overcontrolling and dominating. It was a difficult role to play as I was working with a group of talented actors and they are just amazing.

“When it comes to acting and characterisation I wanted to look equally good on the screen like my co-stars Ritesh (Deshmukh), Vivek (Oberoi) and Aftab (Shivdasani),” the 22-year-old actress said.

Urvashi said the movie is funnier and better than the past films in the franchise.

“I did romance, action and comedy altogether in this film so i had a great fun while shooting it. This film will be three times more funnier, bigger and grander than ever,” she said.

“Great Grand Masti” releases this Friday.

“It is a journey of a man who started out as small clerk and a regular job going guy from there to become the don of Bengaluru, it is an exciting biopic about a guy who is actually alive.”

Calling the experience thrilling, the actor said, “To study a man like that and his mannerism of what happened in his life, it is extremely exciting and it’s more than a gangster film.”

Vivek will next be seen in adult comedy “Great Grand Masti”.

Actress Sonali Raut says that her film ‘Great Grand Masti’ leaking on the internet was unfortunate but expressed confidence that viewers will watch it in the theatres as it is a successful franchise.

“Actually, this film was scheduled to release last year, I don’t know why the release took so long, must be something with the producers but it is finally releasing on July 15,” she said.

It is quite unfortunate that two films of Balaji leaked back-to-back — first ‘Udta Punjab’ and then ‘Great Grand Masti’. But it is a successful franchise; I’m sure that people will like to watch the film in the theatres as watching it on a computer or a laptop is a different experience,” the actress said in an interview.

“It’s a good movie, I’m sure people will like it and will watch it in the theatre only,” Sonali said.

The film leaked on online platforms a week back, post which the makers have preponed its release by a week.

Earlier, controversial film ‘Udta Punjab’ also leaked online, which was produced by the same banner, Balaji Motion Pictures.

Is it a conspiracy against the production house?

“The makers will be the right people to answer that. We artists come in only during the shooting, but then release, strategizing, publicity, depends on the makers. I think the makers should take care of it and be a bit more cautious regarding it,” she said.

Sonali plays the role of a maid named Shiney in the film. She will also feature in an item song ‘Lipstick Laga Ke’ which released on digital platforms on Wednesday.

About the song, she said: “I have five looks in this film and it was a very difficult song because boys visualize me in various avatars and are fantasizing about me. There were a lot of props and themes, different kinds of backgrounds, so it was quite hectic to shoot. There were four days of rehearsals and four days of shooting, so there were a lot of things that we covered. But it was fun to shoot.”

Previously, Sonali featured in Himesh Reshammiya’s ‘The Xpose’ and Salman Khan’s reality show ‘Bigg Boss’.

When the story of this year’s box office behemoth, Sultan, was still a 10-page draft, the film’s producer Aditya Chopra asked its writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar for the name he intended to cast in the eponymous role. Zafar’s answer was: Salman Khan. That’s because the journey of Sultan, as visualised by the director, was akin to that of Khan’s in real life.

“Salman’s professional and personal lives have been dotted with many ups and downs,” says Zafar. Post the actor’s nod, he went about creating the character that he felt “should be equal to Khan’s star power or larger than that” so that even after watching the movie the character lingers in the mind of the audience. With Sultan, creating a record with its opening weekend earning of Rs 345 crore (including the overseas market), the character of this flawed wrestling champion seems to have found a wide acceptance.

For Zafar, Sultan is not all about wrestling but an exploration of what lies within. “Whether you are in a wrestling ring or that of life, you are bound to falter sometimes because of the circumstances. Yet, you have to get up and move forward. And finally, rise above everything to rediscover yourself,” says Zafar about his third outing as a director.

Sports drama was Zafar’s favourite genre while growing up and he loved movies like Raging Bull and the Rocky series. That apart, while studying at Marshall School, Dehradun, he used to play football and take part in many track-and-field competitions. “In a place like Dehradun, without the distractions of clubbing and others, our focus used to be sports or studies,” says Zafar, who moved to Delhi at the age of 16 when he joined Kirori Mal College.

The idea of Sultan, however, came up while watching Sushil Kumar at the London Olympics 2012. “Talking to the media after the final match, Sushil said: ‘I was not there 100 per cent today. But I am going to come back and win the gold medal.’ This statement made me think that there is a story there waiting to be explored in a sport which is very Indian,” he says.

Though Sultan is an author-backed role, he has created an impressive female character too. Anushka Sharma, who has been cast opposite Khan, is a wrestler nursing the dream of winning an Olympic gold. “Technically, the film has big stars, but it is about small things. Due to my middle-class background, I bring in a certain understanding into the characters and their stories which is about self-discovery,” he says.

The process of “self-discovery” is something that the 33-year-old Zafar has undergone himself. Son of a retired army man, he wanted to join the Air Force as a pilot. When it became clear that after failing the medical tests he would have to settle for ground duty, he veered towards theatre, and later on, films. During his college days, he assisted on Shonali Bose’s Amu (2005) and Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya (2004). The Rs 5,000 per month pay for these jobs, he says, was lucrative and eventually helped him choose cinema as career. He quit his masters degree midway and shifted to Mumbai where he landed a job with Yash Raj Studios.

After assisting on a string of projects at YRF, he turned a writer “under sheer pressure” for his directorial debut Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011) and followed it up with Gunday in 2014. “Every writer was charging a huge amount of money which I did not have. When I started writing, I realised the beauty of it lies in the fact that it’s a lonely process. In 2012, Sultan was a draft. Today it is a full-fledged film. This journey has been incredible,” says Zafar.

Knowing the character well, he says, gives an added confidence to a director. Though it is good to have a bound script before the shoot begins, he believes in a more organic process — editing and improvising even on the sets.

During his Delhi college days, he was friends with sportsmen from Haryana who represented India at different competitions. Yet, before Zafar sat down to write Sultan, he had to explore the social milieu the film captures.

Apart from meeting sportspersons in Delhi, he travelled to Haryana to meet people and study them. The film, in a way, sums up the journey most sportsmen go through. The character of Sultan, too, goes through his emotional and physical journey — it has been shot in three different body types of Khan. Notwithstanding this, Zafar hesitates to call it an out-and-out sports film. “It is about the choices one makes in life. It is a romantic sports drama,” he says.

A crucial cricket match, a star Indian cricketer missing in the Middle East, bookies in the shadows, a twisted mastermind playing mindgames and two cops racing against time to find the player before all hell breaks loose – writer-director Rohit Dhawan’s upcoming film, Dishoom has all the ingredients of a potboiler.

In Chandigarh on Wednesday to promote his film along with Parineeti Chopra, actor Varun Dhawan said: “Yes, it is a thriller, packed with action and adventure, one that does not take the audience’s intelligence for granted.”

Varun screened the music track Jaaneman Aah, featuring him and Parineeti, of the film at Waves Cinemas. Dishoom releases on July 29.

The film, also starring John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandes and Nargis Fakhri, will see the comeback of actor Akshaye Khanna as the menacing Wagah who makes the two cops, Kabir Shergill (Abraham) and Junaid Ansari (Dhawan) chase the prize.

Although the film was scripted two years ago, at its heart is the missing golden boy of cricket Virat Sharma. “Who has nothing to do with Virat Kohli,” Varun clarified, adding how they did talk to Virat Kohli and told him about their film.

The film also highlights other issues — of match fixing, and how bookies have no country or religion except, that of money.

“I love it when more than boys girls find me hot. For Punjabis, especially my grandmother, I have become kamzor. But, Mumbai now finds me great and hot,” she said, who plays a mysterious character in Dishoom and is looking forward to Meri Pyaari Bindu and Takadum.

She wants to be an inspiration for others and shares her fat to fit journey.

“I am 27-years-old and this was a 360 degree turn for me, to eat healthy, sleep better, drink lots of water. I am able to work longer hours, dress cooler, have more energy and discipline,” said Parineeti, adding how weight loss has been a constant struggle for her even before she took to acting.

In an industry where ageing looms as one of the biggest threats to any actress, Revathi and Kirron Kher believe they have only got better with time.

For these ‘actors at heart’, age is just a number, creativity stumps competition and insecurity, and a good co-actor only enhances one’s performance.

Revathi and Kher on Wednesday unveiled a Godrej soap television commercial, which starred both of them as grandmothers, reveling in a little tiff over beauty and health with their granddaughter.

In the commercial, Kher is playing the boisterous Punjabi grandmum and Revathi, the rational South Indian grandmum. The actors, who were drawn to the ad because of the script, brand equity and money, feel playing grandmothers is no big deal.

It’s a great phase in the lives of these two talented actors. Kher said some of the best roles and awards have come with the films she has done as a middle-aged or elderly character. “Take Punjab 1984 or Sardari Begum or Khamosh Pani, the Punjabi mother I have played in films are all of a certain age and I have won accolades, something I did not get as a young actress perhaps,” she said.

A calm and poised Revathi feels she has grown and matured on screen according to her age and is thoroughly enjoying the process. “It is true that roles for middle-aged women are hardly created in this industry and it is the case world over. But I realised that instead of complaining, I should make the movies I want to,” Revathi said.

This is her second visit to Chandigarh – she doesn’t really count the first as she was only seven-years-old. Revathi made her mark as an actor in various south Indian movies and films like Love, Muskurahat, 2 States, Nishabd, Ab Tak Chhappan in Hindi.

She has also directed films like Mitr and Phir Milenge. All set to direct a woman-oriented Tamil film, Revathi said cinema primarily is an entertaining media. “That you want to make a socially responsible film is a personal call. I am a socially conscious person,” said the award winning actor-filmmaker who guns for a good subject, irrespective of the language.

“Because languages are blurring, regional cinema is coming up, although it still needs government support. I also feel we need to make our films accessible and include in the international fold regional cinema too. What is an IIFA if there are no Assamese, Oriya, Bengali, Punjabi films and others in it,” asked Revathi.

Two films old as a director, Revathi gravitated towards direction because of an urge to tell stories, to edit, to get into technical aspect of filmmaking, to do background scores and go through post production.

She agrees it’s a physically and mentally draining process, but that her discipline as a Bharatnatyam dancer helps. “South Indian families insist children to learn some art form for it brings discipline, patience, instills hardwork and habit of practice,” said Revathi, a mother to a three-year-old daughter.

Meanwhile, a lean Kher is enjoying the action – both on screen and in the Parliament. “People in Chandigarh have too much time and they eat your head. To answer to their queries about work, I have to keep active and fit. Although I really wish I get one day of mental freedom,” she said.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan feels any movie made on tennis star Sania Mirza will be inspiring and he may like to produce it.

“Whenever there is a movie made on Sania, I think it will be very inspiring and it will be fantastic,” Khan told reporters here last evening after formally launching Sania’s autobiography, titled ‘Ace Against Odds’.

“And I don’t know… ask her if she will let me play her love interest. But, I will produce it for sure,” he said in a lighter vein. Shah Rukh also expressed hope that Indian sports films will soon be able to make a mark on an international platform.

“Someway down the line when sportswomen and sportsmen films are made we feel extremely patriotic also from whichever part of the world they are made. When it’s an Indian sportsperson you will feel for the country,” he noted.

“We have a country somehow perhaps apart from a few sports, we have never made a mark internationally. Inshah Allah…that will happen very soon…as things are progressing,” Khan said.

He said Sania’s book will be quite inspirational.

I have always followed her (Sania’s) career and she has brought so much freshness and so much beauty to all the sports lovers like me,” the 50-year-old actor said.

Appreciating Sania’s grit, determination and love for the sport to rise to the top ranking in doubles game despite her injury, he said, “She (Sania) had an injury and she could not continue with the singles career but she twisted it around and she became the No.1 in doubles.

“All this stuff means she is not giving up the love for sports…and that connects me to great sports person like Sania and every time Sania loses somewhere…she represents our country…I think all of us lose a little bit,” Khan said.

“We all will take away something fantastic from this book…we all will have some learning lesson. Her experiences are very vital and to understand how you fight against things which are going against you,” he said, adding that she’s just truly absolutely inspiring and there should also be a part two of this book.

Reacting to a query, Khan said, “Mine has been a fortunate journey. I can’t really reminisce too many obstacles along the way. I have been very fortunate, many a time I think that perhaps I don’t deserve all this applause, love, and recognition and I need to work harder to deserve this.”

The actor further said there is no alternative to hard work and that’s what one needs to keep doing.

“If I am really sad I cry in my bathroom and then I wipe my tears… come back or hide myself and then wake up in the morning and work harder. If I am successful I have to work hard to be able to retain it and if I am unsuccessful, I have to work hard to be able to regain it and that’s the only way
to deal with obstacles,” he said.

To a question, Sania said, “For me as an athlete the toughest time was during 2010 when I had third surgery and I thought I was going to have to stop playing tennis. That for me was the toughest part because I was being forced to stop doing something that I loved doing. I was actually under depression for a couple of months.”

Neetu Kapoor was among the top actresses of her time — delivering hits and being nominated for awards — when she gave it all up at 21. Bollywood was shocked when Neetu announced plans to marry Rishi Kapoor. But the actress, now mother to Riddhima and Ranbir Kapoor, chose family.

Many alleged that it was due to the Kapoor family’s tradition of not allowing the women in the family to work. Neetu went ahead and dismissed the allegations. She said it then and she repeated it over the years, her decision to quit films was a “personal choice.”

If you look at her career graph, it is not hard to fathom why this successful actress chose family and motherhood instead of reaching new heights in Bollywood. Neetu started her career as a child artist and did 70 films in a span of seven years. When she was 21, she had already done over 20 films with the leading actors of her time.

Neetu told Times of India in an interview, “To give up my career was my decision. I wanted a family. I was really tired of working, I had done almost 70 films in seven years of my career with three shifts everyday. I wasn’t nervous as I had already got familiar with Rishi’s family and knew them well.”

Neetu started acting after her father’s death. She was in Mumbai (then Bombay) and people found her bubbly and she loved dancing. With the name Baby Sonia, she started her career in the 1960s. With her mother Rajee lovingly, yet strictly, managing her career, she went from strength to strength.

Her career as a leading star began with Rickshawala (1972). A dance number in Yaadon ki Baraat brought her immediate success.

She went on to be paired opposite future uncle-in-law Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra and Shatrughan Sinha. She did 11 films with Rishi Kapoor and they continue to be one of the most adorable Bollywood jodis of all times.

Talking about marriage and motherhood, Neetu said in the ToI interview, “I was 14 when I met Rishi. My mom did not like it when she heard about our affair. She would get very upset when he would flirt with me… When Rishi proposed to me and I broke the news of my wedding, mom was very happy for me. Soon after, I announced my marriage, returned all my signing amounts and gave notices to all my producers that I would be getting married in a year’s time. I had shot one scene of Manmohan Desai’s Naseeb and it had to be re-shot.”

Daughter Riddhima was born in the first year after the marriage and Ranbir the following year. Neetu is the perfect daughter-in-law, the perfect wife and the perfect mother. We hope to see more of her onscreen, like in Love Aaj Kal and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

Parineeti Chopra starring opposite Punjabi hearthrob Diljit Dosanjh — now that is a Bollywood jodi we can totally dig. The buzz suggests that this pairing will headline a remake of 80s comedy caper, Chameli ki Shaadi.

Parineeti will sink her teeth into the role which was originally played by Amrita Singh while Diljit will play Anil Kapoor’s role. While nothing has been confirmed, entertainment website Spotboye reported that Phantom has already bought the rights of the remake and Rohit Jugraj will be directing the film.

The film was a hit all those years back and still remains one of the all-time best comic films made in India. It is said that Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan initially wanted to buy the rights of the remake movie, but Deepak Mukut, who is co-producing the remake had already struck a deal with Phantom’s money-handler Mantena, who had earlier produced Ghajini.

The first installment of the movie, which was directed by Basu Chatterjee, also featured late actor Amjad Khan, Pankaj Kapoor and Om Prakash in pivotal roles.

To err is human but when the error is made by megastar Amitabh Bachchan, it is bound to become a topic of discussion on social media for the next few hours. Amitabh on Thursday ( July 14) took to Twitter  to share a ‘Kapoor’ moment, only he got one person wrong. Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor with their Mother ..he tweeted.

Actor Hrithik Roshan says he was “taken aback” by the courage of actress Pooja Hegde, who is set to make her Bollywood debut with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker’s film “Mohenjo Daro”.

Pooja was recently unveiled and introduced to the media by Hrithik at an event which was attended by the entire cast and crew of the film, including Oscar-winning music director A.R. Rahman.

Pooja, a former beauty pageant contestant, has worked in the Telugu films “Oka Laila Kosam” and “Mukunda”.

On Hrithik’s own admission, he was surprised to see the confidence and courage in Pooja the first day they met for a shoot for the film.

“I was taken aback by her courage. I have shot with many stars, but when she looked into my eyes the courage and purity in her struck me. She’s a rare talent and will go a long way in this industry I thought in my mind,” Hrithik said in a statement.

Written, produced and directed by Gowariker, the epic adventure-romance is set in the city of Mohenjo Daro in the era of the Indus Valley civilisation which dates back to 2,600 BC.

“Mohenjo Daro” all set to hit the screens on August 12.

Actress Urvashi Rautela, who will be seen in adult comedy “Great Grand Masti” says it was very challenging to play a virgin ghost in the film.

“It was very challenging to play a virgin ghost. I really enjoyed working on this character as it’s a very complicated character. This is one role that sets you apart. Apart from being ghost, she is the most beautiful girl ever according to the director’s vision. Besides this, she has got this supernatural powers,” the actress told IANS.

“This is the most complex and most difficult character because I have three boys opposite me so I have to be overpowering them, over-controlling them. Yes, my character does have shades of comedy, action and romance,” she added.

When asked if she had any apprehensions in going bold in the film, she said: “Every single actor has a definition of ‘bold’, but if you ask me about the scenes, I would suggest you first watch the film.”

Directed by Indra Kumar, “Great Grand Masti” features Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani and Urvashi Rautela, the film is slated for Friday release.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who is currently preparing for his upcoming film “Meri Pyaari Bindu”, says he will never leave TV or hosting shows on the small screen.

“I started from the small screen. I was a television anchor who started with a youth channel and then ‘India’s Got Talent’. I also hosted IPL…So I guess I never left television as such…” Ayushmann told IANS.

The actor says the small and big screens share a “symbiotic relationship and they cannot exist in isolation”.

“So you can’t say that I have to do television or I have come from television. I am never going to leave television or hosting. I will Judge only if the show is exciting,” added the 31-year-old star.

Ayushmann will be seen essaying the character of a Bengali novelist in “Meri Pyaari Bindu”, which also stars Parineeti Chopra, who will be playing the role of an aspiring singer.

Trouble refuses to end for Great Grand Masti. The film’s release was brought forward to July 15 after the adult comedy leaked online. Now, a day before its release, actor Shiney Ahuja filed a case against the film for naming a character after him.

He has based his case on a report in Bollywood Hungama, which said a maid in the film is called Shiney. The character is reportedly played by actress Sonali Raut.

“Sources add that the three boys Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani will try to find some masti with Shiney and there is also a song sequence with the actress,” the report said.

Shiney has demanded that the makers take off all the scenes of ‘Shiney the maid’ from the film and extend a written apology.

Shiney has filed a case aginst producers Balaji Motion Pictures, Ekta Kapoor, Jeetendra and Maruti International, as well as director Inder Kumar. Shiney was accused by a domestic help of rape.

The actor was convicted in March 2011 by a Mumbai court and sentenced to seven-and-a-half years of jail for raping the help at his home in 2009. The actor had filed the appeal in 2012 when his lawyer sought expeditious hearing. The help had retracted her statement later.
