“Now I’m like, Wait, how far along am I? You’re busy running after the other one and working full time,” she added.

Unless it’s Big B, Bollywood doesn’t have much for 60-plus actors: Danny Denzongpa

Amitabh Bachchan Danny Denzongpo
Danny Denzongpa rues the lack of quality roles for actors who are above 60 years of age saying unless one is Amitabh Bachchan, there’s nothing substantial.

Veteran actor Danny Denzongpa, who does not wish to be typecast as a character actor, rues the lack of quality roles for actors who are above 60 years of age saying unless one is Amitabh Bachchan, there’s nothing “substantial”.

“I don’t do much work these days. Actually, I never have. I get a lot of offers from influential corporate houses. But nothing that excites me.

“If I do smaller roles, I’ll be typecast as a ‘character’ actor. An appalling thought! Our cinema has nothing substantial to offer actors above 60 unless it’s Amitabh Bachchan. In recent times, I’ve enjoyed doing Neeraj Pandey’s ‘Baby’. Now, ‘Kabuliwala’.”

The actor is working on an adaptation of the classic Rabindranath Tagore story “Kabuliwala”. Balraj Sahni had done an adaptation in 1961 — but Danny says he’s not in any way trying to equal the intensity of the great actor’s portrayal.

“To equal Balraj Sahni is not even a possibility. He is such a great actor. I’m doing it my own way, hoping I’d make some impact,” said Danny, a brilliant actor from Sikkim best known for his villainous turn in films like “Agneeepath” and “Dhund”.

The emotional heft in the story of “Kabuliwala” left Danny completely moved.

When a young director named Dev from the Film and Television Institute Of India came to Danny with the idea of doing “Kabuliwala”, the actor fell in love with the suggestion.

“It is a modern take on the classic. But the basic story of a homesick Afghan dry-fruit seller’s ties with a little girl in Kolkata remains the same,” said the actor, adding that he has played the role with great restraint.

“My interpretation of this Afghan character is much more subdued than what I did as an Afghan in ‘Khuda Gawah’. In fact, I got the role of the Kabuliwala on the basis of ‘Khuda Gawah’,” he said.

Praising the film’s team, he said: “The co-actors are so committed. I am working with am actress from the Northeast, Gitanjali Thapa who is wonderful. I didn’t know she was a National Award winner. As for the director, it is so refreshing to work with a new talent.

“Dev is filled with innovative ideas. He is making ‘Kabuliwala’. But not the way it as been made before.”

Danny is excited about the role as it gives him a chance to display his range.

“My age span for the role is from 45 to 80. Lots of elaborate make-up will be done to make me look older. I am enjoying the challenge of doing a character which is emotional and relevant.”

The film’s shooting is nearly complete with just one song to be shot.

Danny is excited to see how far this film goes.

“The producer, Sunil Doshi, plans to take it to film festivals. This film is a process of self-discovery for me.”

Hrithik Roshan’s favourite part in Mohenjo Daro is the climax scene.

Actor Hrithik Roshan says the action directors of “Mohenjo Daro” have pushed the envelope and churned out some “mind blowing action sequences”. And his favourite is the film’s climax scene.

Written, produced and directed by filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, the epic adventure-romance is set in the city of Mohenjo Daro in the era of the Indus Valley civilisation which dates back to 2600 BC.

Produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sunita Gowariker, “Mohenjo Daro” is slated to release on August 12.

“The action directors have pushed the envelope in choreographing some mind-blowing action sequences for the film,” Hrithik said in a statement.

He added: “We have worked really hard on them. Risks and injuries are a part of it but when you see the final outcome, you feel it was all worth it. The climax sequence is particularly my favourite.”

The film’s trailer also gives a sneak peak into the same. There are four sequences where the action takes place in full force, including the fight with a crocodile.

Ali Abbas Zafar, who has directed her in her latest film Sultan, says Anushka Sharma is immensely talented.

From being a part of late legend Yash Chopra’s last film Jab Tak Hain Jaan to working with Karan Johar, who directs her in her forthcoming Ae Dil Hai Mushkil — Anushka Sharma, in eight years since her Bollywood debut, has been working with all the directors who matter in tinsel town. Ali Abbas Zafar, who has directed her in her latest film Sultan, says she is immensely talented.

“I couldn’t have got a better Aarfa for ‘Sultan’. She is a soulful actress with immense talent,” says Zafar, who cast Anushka in the role of a wrestler in the Salman Khan starrer.

Even Salman has praised her, saying she is “good”.

“It’s good to work with people, especially with talented people,” Salman had once said when asked about his experience of working with Anushka, who comes from an army background.

The actress, whose only connect to movies before she stepped in front of the camera was that she watched them, has been on a roll since Yash Raj Films launched her with “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” — an Aditya Chopra directorial — in 2008. And she has always been thankful to the team for believing in her.

Her second impressive role was in “Band Baaja Baaraat” with Maneesh Sharma, who made his debut with the movie in 2010 and has since become a well-known name having helmed “Ladies vs Ricky Bahl”, “Shuddh Desi Romance” and the Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Fan”.

The fact that she has worked with filmmakers as varied as Vishal Bhardwaj (“Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola”), Anurag Kashyap (“Bombay Velvet”), Rajkumar Hirani (“PK”) and Zoya Akhtar (“Dil Dhadakne Do”) has given the film fraternity and the audience a dekko at her versatility.

When she turned producer with “NH10”, she ensured she made the most of working with “Manorama Six Feet Under” fame director Navdeep Singh.

Singh lauded her for her dedication.

“I have not seen a dedicated actress like Anushka. She is extremely talented,” he said.

As for the future, she is also going to begin work with Imtiaz Ali soon in a film which will see her share screen space with Shah Rukh for the third time after “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” and “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”.

Interestingly, Anushka has already worked with the top three Khans of Bollywood — SRK, Aamir Khan (“PK”) and with Salman in “Sultan”.

It has been a learning experience for her.

“They all are unique and fun to work with, you get to learn so much from them. I am lucky that I got a chance to work with all of them,” said the actress, who sticks by the mantra “Do your work and mind your own business” to survive in filmdom.

The movie hit theatres on Eid and, as expected, it’s on its way to break all box office records. Many also see it as Salman’s best film till date. That is debatable, since it offers nothing which was not seen before.

After being rejected by his lady love Aarfa (Anushka), an Olympic gold-aspiring wrestler, Sultan (Salman) vows to become a wrestler. So Sultan not only wins the state championship but also the heart of Aarfa and the duo together go on to write their success story in the corruption-hit 2010 Commonwealth Games. So, all those who saw only Sushil Kumar winning silver in the 2012 event, the footage of an Indian winning gold in wrestling is now available in the your nearest theatre.

The success in Olympics makes Sultan arrogant enough to tell the media, in a very Salman Khan style: “Sultan ko sirf ek hi aadmi hara sakta hai..khud Sultan.”

Well, that sounds like Gabbar Singh (Gabbar ke taap se tumhey ek hi aadmi bacha sakta hai… khud Gabbar). May be Papa Salim, the writer of Sholay, was asked to give this valuable input in the film.

Sultan also asserts that he will next win the World Wrestling Championship to silence all his critics.

But in a tragic twist, Sultan loses his baby boy to an over complicated medical complication. This also results in his relationship with Arafa falling apart, again too complicated to be logical. In short, she holds him responsible for the death as he was away winning the world championship when his rare blood group could have saved her newborn.

An upset Sultan quits wrestling and vows to generate funds to open an O-ve only blood bank in his village. That’s the first half of this 2 hours 48 minute film. Need we say more.

Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma starrer Sultan is out.

With government not doing much for his noble cause, which however will cater only to the small number of O-ve people, Sultan agrees to participate in MMA event to generate funds. From here, the movie takes inspirations from Mithun Chakravorthy’s Boxer (1984), Dharmedra’s Apne (2007), Shah Rukh’s Chak de India (2007) and Akshay Kumar’s Brother (2015) and gets dragged to an extent that it might leave you yawning and thinking “ye scene pehle bhi kahin dekha hai”.

It is a fight of cliches at this point. The wrestling mat has everything from an underdog beating a champion to a badly thrashed hero getting up to fight on imagining his beloved’s face and millions of prayers for the hero being accepted.

When faced with a similar situation in Apne,(ribs fractured during a fight) a Bobby Deol might have quit, but not Salman. After all, “Bhai to Bhai Hain”. The terrific title track — Upar Allah niche dharti Beech mein tera junoon — inspires our desi pehelwan to get up and give dhobi pachaar to give the movie an ending which Salman Bhai’s fans were waiting for.

Despite all loopholes, the movie has some powerful performances. Salman, of course does justice to a role only he could have carried on his broad shoulders. Only he could keep the audience glued to their seats as this not so extraordinary film. But then Salman has been doing it time and time again. He is the extraordinary persona and props up his ordinary movies.

Madaari director Nishikant Kamat has shown support to the makers of Great Grand Masti, which was recently leaked online.

Madaari director Nishikant Kamat has shown support to the makers of Great Grand Masti, which was recently leaked online, and spoke about creating an “eco-system” to fight piracy.

“Madaari”, which stars internationally acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan, was scheduled to be released on July 15, but it will now release a week later at the behest of the makers of “Great Grand Masti”.

“I think the film industry needs to be more supportive of each other,” Kamat said in a statement.

“While we were apprehensive to shift our date again to July 22, we felt strongly that the cause of piracy owing to the leak of ‘Great Grand Masti’ was more crucial, and as creative people we must all support each other and create an eco-system where we hopefully can survive through such tactical ways to fight back things like piracy,” he added.

“Madaari”, which explores a father-son relationship, also features Jimmy Sheirgill in a pivotal role.

Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma have condemned the “ridiculous” and “heinous” act by two medical students who threw a dog from the roof top of a multi-storeyed building. They said serious action should be taken against them.

Actresses Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma have condemned the “ridiculous” and “heinous” act by two medical students who threw a dog from the roof top of a multi-storeyed building. They said serious action should be taken against them.

The two students — Gautam Sudarshan and Ashish Paul — of Madha Medical College from Chennai, were arrested and let out on bail on July 6 for the act.

The video of the incident, recently uploaded on social media, wrung the hearts of even the strongest as it showed a youth on the roof-top of a multi-storeyed building holding a dog which he then cold-bloodedly threw off.

“This is absolutely ridiculous! I am appalled! These two medical students have thrown a puppy off the roof for fun,” Alia wrote on Twitter.

“The dog was rushed to the hospital luckily and has survived but the fine for the murderous act is just Rs 50,” she added.

Anushka too condemned the act and tweeted: “This heinous act is a mirror shown to the society we (‘educated’) people live in. Punishment for this should be serious.

“You can harm a voiceless puppy, pay a Rs 50 fine and be free of your crime? Is this the world you want children to witness and grow up in?

“Lot of people think human lives are more important. It’s sad. Being humane is using your intellect that gods gifted us to make this world a better place,” the “Sultan” actress added.

The dog was later located by animal rights activist Shravan Krishnan. The dog had suffered fractures on its two legs and has been given medical attention.

Asutosh Gowarikar says Pooja Hegde is an apt choice as the lead actress in his upcoming film Mohenjo Daro.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker says Pooja Hegde is an apt choice as the lead actress in his upcoming film Mohenjo Daro. Pooja is gearing up to make her big Bollywood debut opposite Hrithik Roshan in Mohenjo Daro.

“During scripting, I had envisioned a new face for the character of Chaani because I wanted someone without an image or perception attached to her. It had to be someone who depicted grace, dignity and strength, but yet had a girl like naive innocence,” Gowariker said in a statement here.

The Lagaan helmer revealed that it was his wife Sunita who was keen on having Pooja for Mohenjo Daro.

“It was actually Sunita who first noticed Pooja in a TV commercial. She immediately felt that Pooja had a certain screen presence, which once I saw the commercial, even I felt,” he said.

Gowariker immediately called Pooja and auditioned her.

“She was extremely quick on the uptake, took direction very well and was completely aligned with the character that I had in my mind,” he added.

Mohenjo Daro, the epic adventure-romance film produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sunita Gowariker, is set to release on August 12.
