Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has revealed that he had to beg Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji to be part of his debut directorial venture “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”.

“I had lot of trouble while casting for Rani Mukerji’s part in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. I had approached eight heroines and no one agreed (for the role). (I had) given a romantic narration but no one responded. I became like a beggar,” Karan told reporters here at an event.

“Even for Salman Khan’s part (in the movie), I had to roam here and there. Finally it all happened. I had to literally beg Salman and Rani to be on board,” he said.

The “My Name Is Khan” helmer joked that he had even thought of wearing (a) short skirt and doing Rani’s role (in the film) if no one does it.

It was Karan’s good friend Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan, who suggested him to cast Rani.

“I went to Rani who was then going to do ‘Ghulam’. It was suggested to me by Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra. They both recommended Rani’s name after looking at a particular expression of her in ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’. We wanted a known face for Rani’s part as she dies in the beginning (in the movie), but that did not work out,” he added.

1998 blockbuster “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” starred popular on-screen pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Rani featured in a supporting role, while Salman had an extended guest appearance.

Film maker Sanjay Gupta does not seem happy with the annual Bollywood award shows. He says these are “TRP driven” and nobody really cares about the “genuine hard work” that goes behind making films.

Gupta’s comments on Twitter came after the 17th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards, which took place in Madrid, was aired on TV on Sunday evening.

“Bollywood award shows are TRP (Television Rating Points) driven. Whoever gave a sh*t about genuine hard work that goes behind each film. They insult true talent,” Gupta tweeted on Sunday night.

“Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar true heroes who have stayed away from the whole hypocrisy of Bollywood film awards. Respect,” he said.

“Performing at an awards show is revenue for a star. Just as an ad or an appearance. It doesn’t mean that they endorse the hypocrisy,” added the “Kaante” director.

Gupta also lauded Akshay for not mincing words when stating that the only reason he performed at award shows is because he is paid for it.

“Akshay Kumar has never minced his words and has always stated clearly the only reason he has performed at award shows is because he is paid,” Gupta said.

Sunny Leone is someone who rarely needs help to tackle tough questions at press conferences or interviews. For someone who received widespread praise for handling a rather difficult electronic interview with grace and dignity at the start of this year, answering a question about the controversy that erupted over the advertisement of a condom brand she endorses should have been a rather easy one, but for the untimely and unwarranted interference of her husband and manager Daniel Weber.

A particular advertisement of Manforce condoms featuring Sunny Leone released last year had come in for criticism, with politician Atul Anjan terming it vulgar and blaming such commercials for triggering rape incidents in India.

Filmmaker Karan Johar says today audience does not want to see actors repeated for similar roles in different films and instead it has become acceptive of new faces.

“Today, there is a need for fresh and new talent. One doesn’t want a same actor playing the role of a father or mother every time. It is all about finding new and fresh talented people as people praise also and there is acceptance as well,” Johar told reporters at an event.

The 44-year-old “My Name Is Khan” director said he gives a lot of importance to casting in his films.

“As a producer, I never get involved with casting as it the job of a director. When I am a director, casting is an integral part of the film. Today there are variety of characters in a film that have so many layers and shades.”

“I think ‘Lagaan’ opened the door for unusual casting in mainstream cinema. As there was not a single film till 2001 that had so many interesting new faces and they all left a mark.

“It opened doors for casting as earlier it was industry casting, they (actors in ‘Lagaan’) were all real people. I think the large part of the success of ‘Lagaan’ was the casting of the cricket team.”

The filmmaker spoke at the launch of TalentNext, a talent-recruiter online platform, in “Lagaan” director Ashutosh Gowarikar’s presence.

“Lagaan” revolved around a small village whose inhabitants, burdened by high taxes, find themselves in an extraordinary situation as an arrogant officer challenges them to a game of cricket as a wager to avoid the taxes.

The movie had an interesting supporting cast that included late Rajesh Vivek, Aditya Lakhiya, Yashpal Sharma, and Raghubir Yadav.

Only 6 saleable actors today, need for more talent: Karan Johar

Karan Johar, Karan Johar film, bollywood actor, Karan Johar upcoming film, Karan Johar news, entertainment news Bollywood industry needs more talent, says Karan Johar.

Filmmaker Karan Johar says very few actors can rake in the moolah at the box office.

When asked if there was a limited choice of lead actors, he said at a program here this evening, “Yes, it is a big problem. We have hundreds of films to make and there are six (actors) who can sell your film. If you take someone new then you won’t get budget as the film won’t get proper satellite or music rights, or proper release overseas. If you make a small film then you can take a chance.”

The 44-year-old filmmaker said he feels worried when he thinks of doing something new but on a smaller scale.

“The moment I think small, I get worried and scared. I am best when I think large or big,” he said.

In “Student of the Year”, Karan launched three new faces – Sidhharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

“I was very sad when I was making ‘Student of the Year’ as there were no stars on sets. It used to bother me but that was the ethos of the film. It is very limiting,” he said.

“It’s a problem… we are going through crises. There are just a few stars who are viable, saleable, etc., there are many filmmakers and stories to be told.

“The way we used to love our stars up to 80s, that madness and insanity is depleting with time. We need to make more films. There is a dearth of viable actors but we have ‘Talent Next’, it opens doors for talent but it’s up to the audience as they love the actors,” he added.

He was talking at the launch of TalentNext, a talent- recruiter online platform.

Fellow director Ashutosh Gowariker said, “The country needs to love more and more heroes and heroines. There are people who launch faces but that’s once in one or two years. Like Karan did with ‘Student of the Year’ and I am doing with ‘Mohenjo Daro’.

“One needs to create talent,” Karan said. “I need to have saleable face at the end of the day, as I am a producer and not a studio. When I made ‘Student of the Year’ I took chance, fortunately it worked. But it doesn’t work out always.”

“I would request all to launch new faces and then leverage them as I did with Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt as I went on to do several films with them. I think that is what we need to do,” he added.

Good looks are not all that matters, Karan said.

“I don’t know what is your concept of good-looking is, it could be different from mine… Biggest superstars of this country probably don’t conform to traditional and conventional good looks… beauty stops at a point and talent takes over.”

Forbes said the “Fan” star “continues to rule Bollywood’s box office” with lead roles in hit films and also earns multimillion dollars upfront fees and a cut of the back end for his efforts.

“He also cashes in on endorsement deals for dozens of brands most Americans have likely never heard of,” Forbes said.

Akshay, 48, however slipped in ranks this year from 76th in 2015, Forbes said adding that he is one of Bollywood’s busiest leading men and banked top rupee for three hit films.

The list also includes author James Patterson on the 3rd spot followed by Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo (4), basketball player LeBron James (11) and musician Madonna (12).

One third of this year’s honorees hail from outside the US.

Forbes notes that while there is a plenty of geographical diversity on the list, the Celeb 100 underscores the chronic pay gap in the entertainment world since there are only 15 women on the list, down from 16 of last year.

The list includes British singer Adele on the number nine with USD 80.5 million earnings. Chinese actor Jackie Chan ranks 21 on the list with USD 61 million earnings and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen ranks 99th on the list.
