It will be a starless weekend at the box office, with three small budget films opening simultaneously today – Waiting, Phobia, Veerappan. The good news, however, is that audiences can expect to watch some talented actors showing off their mettle in these films.
Waiting, a movie that tells the tale of two people belonging to different walks of life has the brilliant Naseeruddin Shah in action. Joining forces with him is the immensely talented National Award-winning actress Kalki Koechlin. While Naseeruddin has certainly been part of some forgetful movies lately, Waiting looks to be the one that has been waiting in wings to bring back in form this veteran actor. Directed by Anu Menon, this movie has already gathered positive reviews for itself at the Dubai International Film Festival.
Phobia explores a rare anxiety disorder – agoraphobia, which essentially means fear of open spaces. Radhika Apte, in the lead role, develops this phobia after being sexually assaulted. The movie revolves around Apte, who if known for delivering outstanding performances, but it remains to be seen if the actress can pull off a coup to make the movie a sleeper hit.
The final realease of the day is Veerappan, a movie based on the life of the late forest bandit Veerappan, which marks the return of maverick director Ram Gopal Varma. The once-upon-a-time successful film-maker would be looking bounce back after a string of past duds. While he seems to have got a story never-told-before in hand, one will have to wait and watch if RGV has been able to extract masterful performances from newcomer Sandeep Bharadwaj, who plays the title role.
