The police registered an FIR last week after the actor alleged a person posing as him was communicating with a “young lady fan” using an ID (hroshan@email.com) that did not belong to him.
The Mumbai police are in the process of sending a Letter Rogatory (LR) to a US-based court in connection with a complaint lodged by actor Hrithik Roshan earlier about a fake email address.
The police will issue the LR, a formal request from an Indian court to a foreign court, to seek details of the fake e-mail address from the e-mail service provider headquartered in USA. An officer said they would need at least one of the e-mails sent from the fake ID to investigate where the mail had originated, and track down the accused. In his complaint, the actor said that a “young lady fan” had told him she was communicating with him on hroshan@email. The actor told her that the email address did not belong to him.
The police have asked Roshan to provide details about the fan so they could approach her and get the emails she received from the fake address. “Since he himself has not received any e-mails from the impersonator, we told him to give us details of this person who received the emails. We can then try to find where the e-mails originated from and that will help us track down the sender,” said an officer.
In the meantime, the police are also trying to get details of the email address from the service provider. “When we approach someone in a foreign land for details pertaining to a case, they ask us to approach via the legal channel. Hence, we will issue a Letter Rogatory from a court here that will give our request to a US court. The request will then be handed over to the service provider,” said the officer. The officer said that while it may be a time-consuming process, the details given to them by the service provider will help them track down the person sending the emails.
Roshan had initially approached the police in December 2014, but when there were no developments, he sent a reminder to the police on March 5 through his lawyer.
In this reminder, he requested the police to probe the case. After initial investigations, the police decided that there was indeed a case and registered an offence on Friday under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code.
