Director Tigmanshu Dhulia, who is an ardent cricket follower, feels an India-Pakistan cricket match today doesn’t create the same levels excitement as it used to in the 90s. And that has nothing to do with the retirement of stellar players. The filmmaker feels it has much to do with the reduction of bitterness between fans in both countries which only augurs well.
Today an India Pakistan match isn’t as exciting as it used to be in the 90s. In those days, during the time of the match, fans used to be highly divided. There used to be a lot of bitterness. The same has now reduced which is the reason why an India-Australia match becomes more exciting to watch than an India-Pakistan one. And this is a good thing. Bitterness has reduced a lot and we no longer say ‘Pakistan ki aisi ki taisi’.
Cricket is the best barometer to judge the relationship between India and Pakistan,” Tigmanshu told us at an Indo-Pak filmmakers Zeal for Unity press conference held near Wagah border.
The filmmaker also took strong objection to the criticism leveled against Shahid Afridi for speaking openly about the love he received in India. “Shahid Afridi is Pakistani and so is Javed Miandad. So these are two different voices of the same country. Galat log dono jagah hote hai.(Bad people exist in both countries.)”
